Shopify theme detector

Paste a Shopify store's address to find out which theme it uses, its original name even if it was renamed, its version and whether it comes from the official Theme Store.

How the detector works

Every Shopify store declares the theme it uses in its page code. The tool reads the store's homepage and extracts the theme name, its original name, its version and, for official themes, their Theme Store ID.

If a store has renamed its theme, for example "Dawn - working copy", the tool finds the original name: Dawn. Custom-built themes have no Theme Store ID, so the tool shows the name chosen by the brand.

No personal data is collected: only the store's public page is read, and the result is cached for one day to speed things up.

How to find a Shopify theme manually

The detector does in one click what you can also do by hand in your browser. On a computer, open the store and follow these steps:

  • Right-click anywhere on the page and choose "View page source" (or press Ctrl+U, Cmd+Option+U on a Mac).
  • Search the code for "Shopify.theme" with Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac).
  • Read the values: "name" is the name given by the store, "schema_name" the original theme name, "schema_version" its version and "theme_store_id" its number on the Theme Store.
  • Faster still: open the browser console (F12), type Shopify.theme and press Enter to see the same information.

Official theme or custom theme: what's the difference?

Official themes are sold or offered on the Shopify Theme Store. Some are free and made by Shopify, such as Dawn; the others are paid themes made by independent designers. They all have a Theme Store ID, which is how the detector recognizes them even after they are renamed.

Custom themes are built by an agency or a freelancer for a single brand, or bought on a marketplace outside Shopify. They have no Theme Store ID: the detector then shows the name chosen by the store, and you cannot buy that exact theme.

What to do once you know the theme

  • Open the theme's page on the Theme Store to see its demo, its price and its features.
  • Compare the detected version with the latest one: an outdated theme often misses recent Shopify features.
  • Remember that a theme is only the frame: photos, texts, apps and customer experience make most of the difference. Our free Shopify app detector shows which apps a store adds on top of its theme.
  • Take inspiration from the layout, never from the content: product photos, texts and logos belong to the brand.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?

Paste the store's address in the detector above: it shows the original theme name, its version and whether it comes from the Theme Store. You can also search for "Shopify.theme" in the page source, as explained in the guide above.

How can I tell if a website is a Shopify store?

The detector tells you when a site isn't built on Shopify. By hand, look in the page source for addresses starting with cdn.shopify.com or for the "Shopify.shop" variable: both are only present on Shopify stores.

Why does the detector show a strange name?

Brands often rename their theme (working copy, launch date…). The tool then shows the theme's original name in large type and the name given by the store below it.

Does the detector work on every store?

It works on the vast majority of Shopify stores. Headless stores (a site separate from Shopify), password-protected stores or stores with strict bot protection may not reveal their theme.

How do I add a forum to my Shopify theme?

Insider Club works with every Shopify 2.0 theme, official or custom: the forum automatically picks up your theme's colors and fonts, no code needed.
